Black Oystercatcher

This room is named after the African Black Oystercatcher.
During your stay at The-Ark I can guarantee you that you will see them on the rocks of Pearly Beach.
It is a wading bird with black plumage and a very striking orange ring around its eyes with a red iris. It also has a orange- red bill with fleshy pink legs.
The Black Oystercatcher breeds between October and March. The female lays up to four eggs and they take turns in incubating them.
The male and female will stay together for life. Monogamous.

ROOM 2 

Tortoise Room

The Cape Angulate tortoise is one of the more common types of tortoises in the Western Cape.
They like the sandy, coastal regions here with the fynbos as their preferred habitat.
The tortoise is a very shy creature and will retreat into their shell when disturbed.
They mate around September and lay their eggs in a hole where after the hatchlings have to dig their way out of the hole.
With our veldfires the tortoise will bury themselves during the fire.
All South African tortoises are protected by law.

SEAL ROOM

Cape Fur Seal

The Cape Fur Seal (Arctocephalus Pusillus) is the largest of all the fur seal varieties. Its stocky body is covered with a velvety dark grey or brown fur,for which it is often brutally hunted.
The seal is curious and will approach the boats to explore them. They will playfully swimming and interacting with scuba divers but on land they are far more cautious.
The Cape Seal is a carnivore and is feeding only on other animals.
The gestation period of the seal is about 11.75 months on average and has an average life expectancy of 20 years.
The Great White shark is the main predator threatening the Cape Fur Seal and on land the hyenas and jackals snatch their pups.
You can visit these unique creatures from Kleinbaai on boat cruises to Dyer Island .

ROOM 4 

ALBATROS ROOM

  • The Albatross room is named after The Albatross hanging in the house for the past 16 years.
  • This Albatross was picked up by a previous owner, Otto, on the beach in Pearly Beach and thereafter he had the Albatross taxidermed.
  • This albatross was named by Otto as “Trossie.’’
  • The Wandering Albatross habitat is the open ocean, with a wingspan of 2.7 till 3.5 meter.
  • Albatross spends 75% of time flying and breeding mostly at night on the sea.
  • Therefore the Albatross is not visible on land, only deep sea.
  • The Albatross room is therefore very special to The-Ark.
  • This room consist of a Queen size round and has an open plan bathroom.
  • This room has its own patio with sea and mountain views for the private use of this room’s guests only.
  • The bathroom has a Victorian bath and separate enclosed shower.
  • You even have a view while bathing.
  • Equipped with a fridge/freezer and coffee/tee kitchenette
